Hello. Thanks be to God you are here! (RB 66.3). I’m Caspar David Furlich, a new Resident Novice in the Feline Cloister. I’m the Cloister Artist-in-Residence and an art historian specializing in feline art.
Br Ricky asked me to start a new column in the Mewsletter. I’ll be sharing works of art that give us visual images of the teachings of St Benedict and his Rule. This website page displays these articles.
Art As Teacher
As an artist I have grown to deeply appreciate the gifts of studying works of art by others.
Works of art can teach us to look more closely at the world around us. After all, this is what an artist must do.
Art can remind us of what is important to us
Art can also teach compassion and understanding as well as inspire us to action to improve the lives of others.
Art can teach us about ourselves and about others who may be very different from us. We can gain new appreciation for both.
Bottom line for me – I choose to approach art with the lens of discerning how God is present and active.
Art as a Window to Benedictine Spirituality
As I learn more and more about Benedictine practices, I discover these practices and qualities in many different works of art. I’m really excited and want to share this new way of illustrating and modeling Benedictine living.
In each issue of the Mewsletter I will focus on one or two works of art. Then I will share the Benedictine qualities as I discover modeled in them. You will be invited to gaze at these works to see how each speaks to you, especially of the Benedictine way of life.
